Reimbursement & Insurance Coverage in SD

In South Dakota, insurance coverage exists for diabetes, kidney disease (2 appointments/year), and as of December 2018, South Dakota Medicaid covers Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) for up to five hours of service when provided by a RDN or licensed nutritionist. The MNT covered diagnosis codes includes but is not limited to obesity, high cholesterol and other bile acid disorders, Anorexia nervosa, Bulimia nervosa,  underweight, failure to thrive and Celiac disease.


Become an eligible provider with these steps

  1. Apply for an NPI number HERE. After you begin the application, it can take some time to be processed but you will receive an email right away from the website.

  2. Once you have your NPI number, enroll with SD Medicaid HERE.
